Items which you shouldn’t take with you when moving

Before you begin packing for your move, you should check with your moving company to see if there are any items which they won’t move. Even if the moving company is willing to move some items, it might not be a good idea to pack them for transport in the moving truck. Here is an overview of items which you shouldn’t take with you when moving.

Perishables

You cannot bring any perishable items with you on the moving truck, such as refrigerated food items. Try to use up all perishable items in the weeks before you move.

Plants

Some moving companies will transport plants for local moves, but most will not in interstate moves. The main reason for this is because states – especially California, Florida, and Arizona – have strict rules about bringing plants across state lines. Further, moving companies consider plants to be perishable items and cannot guarantee that they will arrive alive.

Flammable items

Anything which could be flammable, such as propane tanks or certain household cleaners, cannot be brought on the moving truck. If you do try to sneak these items into boxes, it might void any insurance policy you have on your belongings should something happen during the move. Like with perishables, try to use up any flammable items or household cleaners before the move.

Open bottles of liquid

Most moving companies will allow you to take opened bottles of non-flammable liquids, such as shampoos. However, this isn’t a good idea because the bottles might leak. If you really want to take your opened shampoos, soaps, and other liquids with you, then put a plastic bag over the top, secure it in place with a rubber band, and then put the lid on. For extra security, put them in another plastic bag to catch any leaks.
